Wall mirrors, floor mirrors and full length dressing mirrors

Three formats, three jobs. A full length mirror is the one you check an outfit in, and it either hangs on the wall, leans against it or stands on its own feet. A wall mirror is the accent piece that goes above a dresser, a vanity or a chest, and it is chosen as much for the frame as for the glass. A cheval or floor standing mirror sits in a frame with a tilting pivot, so you can angle it down toward you, which is the classic dressing mirror. Several models here are built to work either hung or leaning, and the listing says which options a given mirror supports.

Shapes. Arched mirrors are the current default for a reason: the curve softens a wall of straight lines and works over almost any furniture. Round mirrors read lighter and suit a space where you want no visual edges at all. Oval is the traditional cheval shape. Rectangular gives you the most reflected height per inch of wall, which is why full length pieces are so often rectangles. Scalloped and windowpane designs are the decorative end of the range, closer to wall art than a functional dressing mirror.

Frames and materials. Metal frames come in gold, black, silver and bronze, in thin modern profiles and in heavier ornate baroque castings. Solid wood frames appear in fir, pine and mango, in natural, walnut and painted finishes, including hand-carved and distressed pieces. Natural fiber frames give a softer look: woven rattan, jute rope and wooden bead trims. The glass itself is named on the listing, and a number of models specify tempered glass.

Sizing it to the wall. Over a dresser or vanity, a mirror that spans roughly two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width looks balanced, and leaving four to six inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame keeps the pairing from looking crowded. For a full length mirror, you want the glass tall enough to show you head to toe from a few steps back, and hanging it so the top edge sits above your eyeline is a good starting point. Every listing carries the overall frame dimensions, which is what you should measure against, not the glass alone.

Hanging and standing safely. Wall mirrors hang from a hook, a D-ring or a French cleat, and the listing states the fitting supplied. Fix into a stud where you can, and use anchors rated for the mirror's weight where you cannot. Some rectangular and arched mirrors can hang either vertically or horizontally, which is worth checking if the wall is wider than it is tall. A leaning full length mirror should be secured to the wall with a strap or bracket so it cannot slide or be pulled over, which matters most in a room used by children.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

What size mirror should go above a dresser?
As a guide, choose a mirror that spans about two thirds to three quarters of the dresser width, and hang it four to six inches above the top surface. That keeps the two pieces reading as a set rather than as two unrelated objects. Measure against the overall frame dimensions on the listing, since a wide frame adds a lot to the footprint.
How tall does a full length mirror need to be?
It needs to show you head to toe from a few steps back, and mirrors sold as full length in this range are tall enough for that in normal room depths. Hang or lean it so the top edge sits above your eyeline. If the room is narrow, a taller mirror lets you stand closer and still see the whole outfit.
Can an arched mirror be hung on the wall or leaned against it?
Some can do both, and those listings state wall mounted or freestanding. Others are made only to hang, or come with feet and a stand for the floor. Check that line on the product page before you plan the space, because a leaning mirror needs floor depth that a hung one does not.
What is a cheval mirror?
A cheval mirror is a full length mirror held in a floor standing frame on a pivot, so it can be tilted to the angle you want. It is the traditional dressing mirror, and it needs no wall fixing at all. Several in this collection use the classic oval cheval shape.
Is the mounting hardware included?
Each listing states what is supplied, which is typically a hook, D-rings or a cleat for wall mounted mirrors, and feet or a stand for freestanding ones. Fix into a wall stud wherever possible. Where there is no stud in the right place, use anchors rated for the weight of the mirror rather than general purpose fixings.
Can I hang a mirror horizontally instead of vertically?
Some rectangular mirrors here can be hung either way, and the listing says so where that is the case. Arched and heavily shaped frames are made to hang in one orientation only, because the shape has a top. Always check before drilling, since the fixing points differ between orientations.
Are these frames metal or wood?
Both are well represented. Metal frames come in gold, black, silver and bronze, from slim modern profiles to ornate baroque designs. Wood frames appear in fir, pine and mango with natural, painted and distressed finishes, and there are woven rattan, jute rope and beaded frames as well. The frame material is named on every listing.
Do any of these mirrors have lights?
Yes. Several full length dressing mirrors are built with integrated lighting along the frame, which is useful if the bedroom has no natural light where you get dressed. Those listings describe the lighting and how it is powered. The rest of the range is unlit.
Is the glass safe if it breaks?
A number of these mirrors are specified with tempered glass, and where that is the case it is named in the listing. Tempered glass is heat treated so that it breaks into blunt granules rather than sharp shards. Check the product page for the glass type if that is a priority for you.
Does a leaning mirror need to be fixed to the wall?
Yes, secure it. A tall leaning mirror can slide on a hard floor or be pulled forward, so fitting the supplied strap or a bracket to the wall behind it is the right call. This is particularly important in a bedroom used by children or where the floor is polished wood or tile.
How do I clean a framed mirror?
Spray glass cleaner onto a soft cloth rather than directly onto the mirror, so liquid cannot run down and sit at the frame edge where it can damage the backing over time. Wipe metal frames dry after cleaning. Use only a dry or barely damp cloth on wood, rattan and beaded frames.
