Bed frames, bed bases and bedsteads: what separates one from another

Start with the mattress size. The frames here cover the five standard sizes, and those measurements do not change between brands: twin is 38 by 75 inches, full is 54 by 75, queen is 60 by 80, king is 76 by 80 and California king is 72 by 84. California king is the narrower, longer of the two king sizes, which is why it suits tall sleepers and long, narrow rooms. Once you know the mattress you are keeping, the frame footprint on the listing tells you the floor space it will actually occupy, which is always larger than the mattress itself.

Then choose a form. A platform bed carries the mattress directly on wooden slats and sits low, often with clearance underneath for storage boxes. A sleigh bed curves the headboard and footboard outward in the traditional Louis Philippe manner. A panel bed keeps those same flat surfaces upright and squared off. A canopy or four-poster bed runs posts to a top frame and draws the eye upward, and several are supplied so the canopy can be left off. Daybeds and trundle beds bring a second sleeping surface out from underneath, which is what makes them useful in a guest room or a shared kids room.

Materials. Solid wood frames appear in oak, pine, poplar, eucalyptus and rubberwood, finished natural, walnut, espresso, cappuccino, gray or white. Rattan is woven into headboards and footboards on the lighter, more relaxed frames. Iron and metal frames give the slimmest profile of all. Upholstered beds are covered in velvet, boucle, chenille, linen, corduroy, canvas, sherpa and teddy fleece, with the fabric named on each listing so you can judge texture and cleaning before you buy.

What the specs mean. Slat support is the deck the mattress rests on: closely spaced wooden slats, often with a center rail and extra legs on queen and larger sizes, hold a mattress without sagging. Where a frame is built that way, the listing says no box spring is needed. Other frames, particularly traditional sleigh and panel designs, are made to sit over a foundation, and those listings say so. Under-bed clearance decides whether storage boxes fit. Headboard height decides how far the frame projects up the wall, and the tall upholstered headboards here run considerably higher than a standard panel.

Matching the frame to the room. Low platform frames and slatted headboards make a small room read taller and open. Sleigh and panel beds in warm wood suit traditional and transitional bedrooms and hold their own against heavier furniture. Upholstered and tufted headboards soften a room and are the practical choice if you read or work in bed. Canopy frames want ceiling height above all else, so measure before committing. If you need storage more than anything, look to the frames with side drawers, a storage headboard or a trundle rather than adding furniture elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

What are the standard bed frame sizes?
The mattress sizes here are twin at 38 by 75 inches, full at 54 by 75, queen at 60 by 80, king at 76 by 80 and California king at 72 by 84. Buy the frame that matches the mattress you already own, and check the frame footprint on the listing, since headboards, footboards and side rails all add to the space the bed occupies.
Do I need a box spring with these bed frames?
It depends on the frame. Platform beds with a full wooden slat deck are designed to take a mattress directly, and those listings state that no box spring is needed. Traditional sleigh and panel frames are often built to sit over a foundation instead. Every product page states which applies, so check before ordering a base you may not need.
What is a platform bed?
A platform bed supports the mattress on a built-in slat deck rather than on a separate foundation. That usually means a lower overall height, a cleaner profile and no extra base to buy. Many in this range also give useful clearance underneath for storage boxes.
What is the difference between a sleigh bed and a panel bed?
A sleigh bed curves the headboard and often the footboard outward, in the traditional Louis Philippe style, which gives it a heavier, more formal look. A panel bed keeps those surfaces flat and upright. Both are offered here in wood and in upholstered versions with tufted fronts.
How much ceiling height does a canopy bed need?
Measure your ceiling height and compare it with the overall frame height on the listing, then allow visual breathing room above the top rail so the bed does not look wedged in. Several canopy and four-poster frames in this range can be used with the canopy top left off if the height is tight. Low-profile rattan and floor-style canopy frames suit rooms with less headroom.
How is the mattress supported?
Most frames here use closely spaced wooden slats, and larger sizes commonly add a center support rail with extra legs to stop the middle sagging. Slat spacing and the number of support legs are given on the listing. Foam and hybrid mattresses in particular need that closer spacing, so read the support description if you sleep on foam.
Is there storage under the bed?
Some frames build it in with side drawers, a storage headboard or a lift-up section, and those are described in the listing. Others simply leave clearance under the slats for boxes and flat containers. Check the under-bed clearance figure against the height of the storage you plan to use.
What is a trundle bed?
A trundle is a second, lower bed that rolls out from under the main frame, usually in twin or twin XL. It gives you an extra sleeping place without a second bed permanently taking up floor space, which makes it useful in guest rooms and shared kids rooms. Daybed frames in this collection work the same way.
How do I clean an upholstered bed frame?
Vacuum the fabric regularly with a soft brush head to stop dust settling into the weave, and treat spills straight away by blotting rather than rubbing. Velvet and boucle both benefit from brushing the pile back in one direction after cleaning. Follow the fabric care note on the product page, since chenille, linen and boucle each behave a little differently.
Is assembly difficult?
Most frames arrive flat and are put together with the supplied hardware, and two people make the job considerably easier once you are handling a headboard or full-length side rails. Each listing states what assembly involves. Canopy and four-poster frames take longest, because the posts and top rails go on last.
Does the bed frame come with a headboard?
Almost all of them do, and the headboard style is named in the listing: panel, slatted, curved, cane, rattan, tufted, button tufted, wingback or plain upholstered. Headboard height varies a great deal, from low slatted designs to tall upholstered fronts, so check the stated height against your wall and any window sills or wall fittings behind the bed.
