Sizing a coffee table to your sofa
A coffee table works best at roughly two thirds the length of the sofa it faces, with the top level with or slightly below the seat cushions. Leave 16 to 18 inches between the table edge and the sofa so there is room to walk past and to sit down without knocking a shin.
Glass, wood and two-tier tops
Tempered glass keeps a small room feeling open because you see the floor through it. Solid wood hides marks better and takes daily use. Two-tier designs add a lower shelf for books and remotes, which keeps the top surface clear.
