Standing coat rack height and size

A standing coat rack should be tall enough that long coats hang clear of the floor, which usually means a height near 6 feet. Heights here run 67 to 74.8 inches, and widths run 11 to 28.3 inches.

Measure the spread of the hooks as well as the base, since hooks can reach past the feet. Hang heavy bags on opposite sides of the rack so the load stays balanced and the stand does not lean.

Wooden coat rack construction and finishes

A wooden coat rack gives a warm, traditional look, and most models here list solid wood in their construction, with many built from solid wood throughout in walnut, brown, natural or white finishes.

Other designs pair a metal frame with wood, MDF or engineered wood panels, and select models add glass. Dust wood with a soft dry cloth rather than soaking it, and wipe metal with a damp cloth, then dry it.

Coat rack with shelf storage

A coat rack with shelf space holds hats, bags, gloves and shoes as well as coats, so one piece organizes the whole entry. Some models here add shelves or other storage, and a select design combines hooks and shelves in a wall unit.

Keep heavier items on the lowest shelf so the center of gravity stays low, and save the upper hooks for lighter jackets and hats.

Entryway coat rack placement

An entryway coat rack belongs within a step or two of the door, where people take off their coats, but outside the door's swing and the main walkway. A corner is often the best spot, since a round stand tucks in without blocking traffic.

Away from the entry, a standing rack also works in a bedroom for robes and bags, or in a home office for jackets and a work bag. On hard floors, felt pads under the base help protect the finish.
