The sofa sets the room. The Big Fluffy Couch is an oversized modular sectional with removable, machine-washable slipcovers; the Boneless Couch is a no-assembly memory-foam sectional you unbox and fluff. Both are modular, so you can build an L-shape, a U-shape or a simple loveseat and rearrange later.

Around the sofa, a coffee table sets the scale and an ottoman adds a footrest or extra seat that tucks away. Benches work as a window seat or overflow seating. Leave about 18 inches between the sofa and coffee table so there is room to reach without crowding the walkway.

Arranging a living room starts with the focal point — usually the TV or a fireplace — and a sofa placed to face it, with seating no more than about eight feet apart so conversation carries. In a small or narrow room, a modular sofa lets you drop the sectional to a two-seat plus ottoman.
