Clean lines and a minimalist grid on top make this gray wood pergola a quiet backdrop that lets plants take center stage. Train grapes, sweet potatoes, passionflower, ivy or morning glory up the posts and across the beams. The shade thickens over time.

Posts, diagonal braces and beams are fir wood, and the kit includes L-shaped metal plates and expansion screws. Its footprint is 239.8 inches wide and 143.7 inches deep, roughly 12 by 20 feet, a generous footprint for a backyard or patio. One tip from the instructions: keep screws at least 0.6 inches from the edge of a wood plate, or the plate can crack.

Construction: solid fir.
