Dark brown console table or light brown: picking the tone

A brown console brings warm wood to an entry and ties in with floors, doors and trim. Choose a shade a step lighter or darker than the floor so the table reads as intentional. Espresso and dark brown stand out on light oak, while natural and light brown finishes lift a dark floor. Walnut sits in between.

Drawers are the most common setup here. The 36 inch entryway consoles have four drawers for a small foyer, three-drawer consoles run from 43.3 to 60 inches wide, and two-drawer consoles include a 36 inch solid mango table with woven cane panels, a 47 inch espresso table and a 53 inch oval fluted table.

Open lower shelves, cabinet doors and fluted fronts appear across the range. For a tight hallway, a 47.2 inch natural console is only 9.4 inches deep, and a 63 inch console with shelves is 11.8 inches deep. A 59.8 inch natural console has power outlets built into the side of the top, and a 35.4 inch console has a glass top.

Solid wood options include mango consoles at 36 and 43.3 inches and a 54 inch solid wood table. Many others pair solid pine, acacia or birch with MDF panels, and some have a metal frame. Construction: MDF or particleboard panels with a wood-look finish on the remaining models.

Size the table to about two thirds the length of the sofa or wall it serves and leave 30 inches of walkway in front. Darker browns look sharp with brass and light walls, natural finishes with black hardware and plants. Dust along the grain with a soft, dry cloth and use coasters under plants and drinks.
