Dressers

Clothes storage in two shapes: the wide double dresser that runs low along a wall and gives you a surface for a mirror or a television, and the tall chest that stacks the same drawer space into a narrow footprint. Solid wood, rattan and steel builds, with drawer counts from two up to nine.

Dressers and chests of drawers: wide, tall, and how they differ

Width or height, pick one. A wide dresser, sometimes called a double dresser, runs low and long with drawers side by side. It gives you the largest usable top surface in the bedroom, which is why it is the piece people put a mirror or a television on. A tall chest of drawers stacks the same storage vertically and takes up far less wall. If you have wall to spare, go wide; if you are working around a door swing, a radiator or a window, go tall. Some models are offered as a matched pair of narrow chests, which lets you flank a bed or a window without one bulky piece.

Drawer counts and layouts. Configurations here run from two drawers up to nine, and the arrangement matters as much as the number. Six-drawer double dressers usually give you two columns of three, which suits folded clothes. Nine-drawer models mix shallow top drawers for small items with deeper drawers below. Some layouts swap a bank of drawers for a cabinet door and internal shelves, which is more useful for bags, bedding and anything that will not fold flat. A few include a lined jewelry tray in the top drawer.

Materials. Solid wood is well represented, in rubberwood, pine, fir and acacia, finished natural, oak, walnut, espresso, gray, white and black. Rattan appears as woven drawer fronts on the more relaxed designs. There is also a run of steel dressers, with metal frames and quiet-glide rails, which wipe clean and suit a more industrial or minimal room. Fluted and reeded fronts, ripple textures and handle-free push-open drawers give you the same storage in very different visual weights.

What the specs are telling you. Drawer construction is the honest indicator of how a dresser will age. English dovetail joints, ball-bearing slides and self-closing runners are called out in the listings that have them, and those are the details that keep a heavily loaded drawer running straight for years. Top weight ratings, where published, tell you what the surface is built to carry, which is the figure to check before putting a television on it. Anti-tip kits are included with several models, and fitting one is worth doing on any tall chest, particularly in a child's room. Assembly requirements are stated on each product page.

Choosing a style. Tapered and angled legs with a walnut or oak finish read mid-century. Bun feet, wire-brushed finishes and metal knobs read farmhouse and traditional. Fluted fronts and gold-capped legs sit with glam and contemporary schemes. Metal-framed chests suit industrial rooms and rental spaces where you want something easy to move and easy to clean. If you are pairing a dresser with a mirror, several models are listed as a dresser and mirror set, which saves matching finishes across two separate purchases.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a dresser and a chest of drawers?
In practice, a dresser is the wider, lower piece with drawers side by side, while a chest of drawers is the taller, narrower form that stacks them. The terms overlap and both are used across this collection. Choose on the space you have: a wide dresser needs a long clear wall, a tall chest needs very little.
How many drawers do I need?
For one person, a three to five-drawer chest usually holds everyday folded clothes. For a shared bedroom, a six or nine-drawer double dresser gives each person their own columns. Deep lower drawers take bulky items such as sweaters and bedding, so look at the layout rather than the drawer count alone.
Can I put a television on a dresser?
Wide dressers give the most stable surface for one, and several in this range are described for that use. Check the published top weight rating on the listing against the weight of your television and stand, and confirm the top is wider than the stand's feet. Fitting the anti-tip strap first is sensible with any screen on furniture.
How are the drawers built?
Listings call out the construction where it is a feature: English dovetail joints at the drawer corners, ball-bearing slides, self-closing runners and quiet-glide rails on the steel models. Those details are what keep a fully loaded drawer running smoothly and square. Where a dresser uses a simpler runner, the listing describes that instead.
Do these dressers come with an anti-tip kit?
Several include one, and the listing says so. An anti-tip kit is a bracket and strap that fixes the back of the dresser to the wall so it cannot pitch forward when drawers are open. It is worth using on any tall chest, and especially in a child's room or nursery.
Are the dressers solid wood?
Many are, in rubberwood, pine, fir and acacia, and the listing names the wood. Others use rattan drawer fronts, and a separate run of models is built from steel with a metal frame. The material is stated on every product page rather than left to the photography.
Do any dressers come with a matching mirror?
Yes. A number are listed as a dresser and mirror set, where the mirror is finished to match and designed to sit on or above the dresser top. Others are sold as the dresser only, and the title makes that clear. Buying the set is the simplest way to get an exact finish match.
How wide are these dressers?
Widths span narrow three-drawer chests through to long nine-drawer models that run most of a wall. Exact width, depth and height are on every listing. Measure your wall first, then subtract clearance for the drawers to open fully and for any door or radiator nearby.
Do dressers arrive assembled?
Some arrive fully built, and others are flat and need assembling with the supplied hardware, which typically means fitting the legs, the back panel and the drawer fronts. The requirement is stated on each listing. Larger double dressers are much easier with a second pair of hands.
Are any of these suitable for a nursery or kids room?
Several are described for exactly that, with rounded edges, handle-free fronts or bright finishes, and with an anti-tip kit supplied. Keep the heaviest items in the bottom drawers and fix the unit to the wall. A wide, low dresser also doubles as a changing surface in a nursery.
How do I care for the finish?
Dust wood finishes with a soft dry cloth and wipe spills immediately rather than letting them sit. Avoid abrasive cleaners on wood and on painted steel alike. If drawers start to stick over time on a wood dresser, check that the unit is sitting level, since an uneven floor is the most common cause.
