Solid oak dining table or an oak top

Oak here comes two ways. Three telescopic tables are solid oak, in a natural or walnut finish, extending from about 47.2 inches to 59 or 63 inches. Most others pair a real oak surface layer over a wood core with solid hardwood legs or a solid hardwood pedestal, and one round trestle table has an oak-tone finish. Solid oak can be sanded and refinished down the line, while an oak top gives the same grain in a lighter table.

Round oak dining table and oval oak dining table options

Round and oval shapes lead the range. A 47.24 inch round trestle pedestal table seats four, and several round tables start at 42 inches across and extend to 56 or 58 inches with a leaf. Oval choices include a light oak pedestal table with a hidden storage compartment that opens to 60 inches, and an 80 inch gray oak oval on a dual pedestal that seats six.

Oak extending dining room table sizes

Most oak tables here extend. Rectangular farmhouse tables go from 59 to 77 inches with an extra leaf, and the fixed rectangular tables measure 68.75 by 35.4 inches and seat four to six. Table heights run 29.53 to 30.94 inches, a standard dining height for 18 inch chair seats. Allow about 36 inches behind each chair so people can get up easily.

Light oak dining table finishes and care

Natural and light oak finishes keep a room bright and suit Scandinavian and coastal rooms, while espresso, walnut and gray oak finishes read darker and more formal. Wipe the top with a soft damp cloth and dry it, use placemats and trivets under hot dishes, and keep the table out of strong direct sun to slow color change. Tops with a listed rating hold 200 to 300 pounds.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is oak good for a dining table?
Oak is a very good dining table wood because it is hard, dense and shows a strong, open grain that hides small marks. Solid oak can be sanded and refinished later. The oak tables here include solid oak telescopic tables and tables with a real oak top on solid hardwood legs.
How do you care for an oak dining table?
Care for an oak dining table by wiping it with a soft, slightly damp cloth and drying it right away, then dusting it regularly. Use placemats, coasters and trivets so heat and water never sit on the finish. Keep it out of strong direct sun, which slowly changes the color of natural oak.
How do you clean an oak dining table?
Clean an oak dining table with a cloth dampened in warm water and a drop of mild dish soap, wiping with the grain, then dry it with a clean cloth. Avoid soaking the wood, abrasive pads and harsh sprays, which can dull the finish on solid oak and oak tops alike.
How do you protect an oak dining table?
Protect an oak dining table with placemats, coasters and trivets for daily meals, and a table pad or cloth for crafts and homework. Lift rather than drag heavy items, and keep the table away from heating vents and direct sun so the wood does not dry out or fade.
What chairs go with an oak dining table?
Chairs in black, cream, green or upholstered linen go well with an oak dining table because they contrast with the warm grain. Black metal or black wood chairs suit modern oak tables, and cane or rattan backs suit natural oak in a Scandinavian or coastal room. Matching oak chairs can look flat, so vary the tone.
Are oak dining tables out of style?
Oak dining tables are not out of style. Natural and light oak suit current Scandinavian, coastal and modern farmhouse rooms, and darker espresso, walnut or gray oak finishes give a more formal look. Round pedestal oak tables and long rectangular oak tables both remain popular choices.
