Choose a depth that suits your plants. Shallower beds, from 10 inches tall, work for greens and herbs, and taller beds give roots more room.

Tall outdoor planters and trellis models

Tall outdoor planters reach up to 73.2 inches, and select models add a trellis for climbing plants such as beans or clematis. A tall planter works well beside a door or along a fence line.

Narrower tall designs fit tight corners, so check the depth before placing one. Place a trellis planter near a wall or fence so climbing plants have support.

Self watering planters and materials

Select models are self watering planters, which hold a water reserve so soil stays evenly moist between top-ups. A few others have wheels, stack, or include storage.

Materials include solid wood, resin or plastic, aluminum, steel, iron and magnesium oxide. Metal and resin need little upkeep, while wood benefits from a sealed finish and some care outdoors. Whatever the material, make sure the planter drains and lift it slightly off the deck on feet or blocks.
