Small sideboard cabinet styles

Farmhouse barn-door sideboards in gray-washed, black and white put a drawer for utensils over a two-door cabinet with X-brace or barn-style panels. Mid-century credenzas in natural or black have sunburst wood-grain doors on tapered legs, and the walnut sideboard adds carved geometric doors, gold bar handles and splayed legs.

Small kitchen sideboard and coffee bar

At 30 to 31.5 inches wide, most of these fit a kitchen wall or the end of a counter run as a coffee bar, with the machine on top and mugs, pods and filters inside. The 12 inch deep black barn-door sideboard is the slimmest, good for a hallway or narrow dining room. Heights of 31.5 to 33.6 inches sit near counter height for easy serving.

Small black sideboard and modern finishes

Black hides scuffs in a busy kitchen, white keeps a small room bright, and walnut, natural and gray-washed finishes warm up a dining space. For something larger, the 47.25 inch brown sideboard has a dark pine veneer, two doors with vertical bar handles and leveling feet.

Small dining room sideboard sizing

Leave about 36 inches between the sideboard and the dining table so chairs and doors clear. Check that the doors can swing fully open, and choose a depth of 15 to 17.5 inches for dinner plates. Select models have adjustable shelves for tall pitchers or small appliances.

Small pine sideboard construction and care

Construction: MDF and particleboard on the farmhouse barn-door models, MDF with solid wood legs on the mid-century and walnut styles, and solid pine with MDF panels and a pine veneer surface on the 47.25 inch model. Wipe with a damp cloth, dry right away and use trivets under hot dishes.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sideboard?
A sideboard is a low storage cabinet with doors, drawers or both, used in a dining room to hold dishes and linens and to serve food from its top. Small sideboards here are 30 to 47.25 inches wide, sized for apartments, kitchens and entries as well as dining rooms.
How do you decorate a sideboard?
Decorate a sideboard by hanging art or a mirror centered above it, then adding a lamp or tall vase on one side, a stack of books or a tray in the middle and a plant on the other. On a small sideboard, keep decor light so the top stays usable for serving.
What is the difference between a sideboard and a buffet?
A sideboard and a buffet are both low dining storage cabinets; a sideboard usually has short legs or sits closer to the floor, while a buffet is often longer with taller legs. Today the terms are used almost interchangeably. Small sideboards here are 30 to 47.25 inches wide.
What is a sideboard used for?
A sideboard is used to store dishes, glassware, table linens and serving pieces, and its top serves as a surface for food, drinks or decor. Small sideboards also work as coffee bars in a kitchen, entry storage, or a low TV stand in a living room.
What do you put on a sideboard in a living room?
Put a lamp, a stack of books, a plant and one piece of art or a mirror on a sideboard in a living room. A small sideboard can also hold a speaker or a small TV. Store games, chargers and throws inside to keep the room tidy.
How high above a sideboard should you hang art?
Hang art 6 to 10 inches above a sideboard, with the art about two thirds the width of the sideboard. On a 30 to 31.5 inch small sideboard, a piece about 20 inches wide looks balanced, and the center of the art should land near eye level.
