Mesh office chairs with breathable backs

A mesh office chair uses a woven tensioned panel instead of a padded backrest, so air moves through the back rather than being trapped against it. Every chair here has a mesh back, and each listing states its seat height range, weight rating and adjustments.

A foam and fabric back holds body heat; a mesh back does not, because the weave is mostly open. That matters most if you sit for long stretches, if the room runs warm, or if you notice a warm back by mid afternoon.

The trade-off is support. Mesh conforms to your back rather than pushing against it, so a mesh chair without a separate lumbar mechanism can feel unsupported low down. Most chairs here carry lumbar support and the listing says so.

Seat height range decides whether the chair fits your desk. A 29 to 30 inch desk wants a seat adjusting through roughly 17 to 21 inches, which puts the forearms level with the surface and the feet flat.

Weight rating is stated per listing rather than assumed, and the adjustments vary: seat height is universal, but recline lock, armrest height and lumbar depth are not, and each listing names the ones that chair actually has.

Mesh fails differently from foam. Foam compresses and flattens, while a tensioned panel loosens. A well tensioned panel on a metal frame lasts years, and the frame material is stated on each listing.

How to clean office chair
Vacuum a mesh back with a brush attachment to lift dust out of the weave, then wipe it with a cloth wrung out in warm water and a little mild detergent. Do not soak it: water sitting in a tensioned panel takes a long time to dry and can mark the frame. Wipe the base and castors separately, since hair wraps around castor axles and is the usual reason a chair rolls badly.
How to adjust office chair
Set seat height first: lift the lever under the seat on the right with your weight off the chair to raise it, and with your weight on it to lower. Aim for feet flat on the floor and forearms level with the desk. Recline tension is usually a knob under the seat front, and the recline lock is a separate lever. Why does my office chair keep going down?
A chair that sinks has a failed gas lift cylinder. The cylinder holds pressurised gas to support your weight, and once the seal goes it can no longer hold height. It is not a fault in the seat or the base, and it is not something tightening will fix. The cylinder is a replaceable part on most chairs.
How to make office chair more comfortable
Set the height so your forearms are level with the desk and your feet are flat, then adjust the backrest so the lumbar support meets the small of your back rather than sitting above or below it. If the seat edge presses into the back of your knees, the seat is too deep for you. On a mesh chair, resist over-tightening the recline: some give is what lets the mesh do its job.
