Metal Benches

A metal bench is a steel, iron or aluminum bench made to stay outside on a porch, patio or garden path, with a few indoor shoe benches for the front door. These run 39.5 to 63 inches wide, from slatted park benches and floral iron backs to gliders and benches with wood or concrete tops.

Metal outdoor bench styles

A metal outdoor bench stays put in wind and shrugs off rain, which is why it is the classic porch and garden seat. The range here covers slatted park benches with curved armrests, high backs with floral scrollwork in black iron or steel, a cream white bench with swirling flourishes, gliders with sling seats, and low backless benches. Most seat two, and a wide glider seats three.

Metal garden bench sizes

Widths run from 39.5 to 63 inches. The classic two-seat garden benches are about 50 inches wide and 30.3 to 35.1 inches tall at the back, and the 43.7 inch cream white bench reaches 38.6 inches. Low benches for a deck edge or an entry stand 14.4 to 18.4 inches high, and the narrowest is only 11.8 inches deep.

Metal wood bench and concrete tops

Pairing metal with a warmer top softens the look. Acacia slats and tops in a teak finish sit on black steel and iron frames, a solid wood seat in a natural finish rests on black metal legs, and an aluminum bench wears an ash brown wood-tone powder coat. The 48 inch sled-base benches set a wood-grain concrete seat on metal, for the look of wood without the upkeep.

Metal patio bench gliders and shoe benches

The glider benches rock smoothly on gliding arms, with water-resistant, quick-drying sling fabric over powder-coated steel, and the two-seat gliders hold up to 440 pounds. For indoors, the shoe storage benches pair a black steel frame with shelves, or a padded gray chenille seat with a solid wood and iron frame, by the front door.

Black metal bench care

Powder-coated steel, iron and aluminum hold up outdoors with a little care. Wash the frame with mild soap and water, dry it, and touch up any chip in the coating before rust can start. Aluminum does not rust. Cover or store benches through harsh winters, and oil acacia slats once or twice a year.

Frequently asked questions

How do you clean a metal bench?
Clean a metal bench with warm water, a little mild dish soap and a soft cloth or brush, then rinse and dry it so water does not sit on the frame. Skip abrasive pads, which scratch powder coating. Wipe acacia or wood slats separately, and brush loose dirt off concrete seats before washing.
How do you remove rust from a metal bench?
Remove rust from a metal bench by sanding the spot down to bare metal with fine sandpaper or a wire brush, wiping away the dust, then sealing it with a rust-inhibiting metal primer and matching outdoor paint. Catch chips in the powder coat early. Aluminum benches do not rust, which makes them the low-care choice.
How do you secure a metal bench to the ground?
Secure a metal bench to the ground by bolting the feet to a concrete pad or deck with anchor bolts or lag screws, or by using ground anchors in soil. Check that the feet have holes or mounting plates first. Lighter benches and gliders benefit most from anchoring on an exposed, windy site.
How tall should an outdoor bench be?
An outdoor bench seat should be about 16 to 18 inches off the ground, close to a dining chair, with a backrest that brings the overall height to around 30 to 35 inches. The metal benches with backs here stand 26 to 38.6 inches tall overall, and the low backless benches stand 14.4 to 18.4 inches high.
How do you choose an outdoor garden bench?
Choose an outdoor garden bench by where it goes and how much care you want. Measure the spot, plan about 24 inches of seat per person, and pick a material: powder-coated steel and iron for a classic heavy bench, aluminum for no rust, or wood and concrete tops for warmth. Gliders add a gentle rocking motion.
How do you decorate an outdoor bench?
Decorate an outdoor bench with a weatherproof seat cushion, two or three outdoor pillows and a pair of planters at each end. On a black metal bench, bright cushions and greenery stand out, while a white or cream bench suits soft blues and natural tones. Bring fabric inside before heavy rain.
