Solid wood bookcases built from real timber
A solid wood bookcase is built from boards of real timber rather than a wood-look sheet over particle board. None of the bookcases on this page has an MDF, particle board or plywood carcass.
A bookcase is the one piece of furniture asked to hold a heavy, evenly distributed load for years without moving, and that is exactly the load case that finds out a board shelf.
Particle board and MDF sag under sustained weight, and the sag is permanent: the shelf does not recover when the books come off. Solid timber is stiffer along its length and holds a line far longer at the same span.
Span is the other half of it. A shelf sags as a function of its unsupported width, so a 36 inch shelf carries far better than a 48 inch one in the same material. Where a supplier publishes a per-shelf load rating, the listing states it.
Only bookcases whose stated construction is solid timber with no board core qualify. A case with a solid wood frame and MDF shelves is a reasonable bookcase and it is not this, so it is not here. Some cases combine timber with glass or metal and their listings say so.
A tall case wants fixing to the wall whatever it is made from, and solid timber makes that more important rather than less, because the case itself is heavier. Anti-tip hardware is included on many of these.
