Solid wood desks in oak, walnut, mango and rubberwood

Solid wood means the panel you are looking at is a board of real timber all the way through. The alternative, which most desks at this price are, is fibreboard or particle board finished with a printed wood-look foil or a thin veneer.

Both can look identical in a photograph and they behave differently. A solid board can be sanded and refinished, holds a screw again after it has been taken apart, and does not swell at a cut edge the way a board core does when it meets water.

The line this collection draws is strict. A desk qualifies only if no MDF, particle board, plywood or veneer appears in its construction. A desk built on a solid wood frame with MDF panels is a good desk, it is not a solid wood desk, and it is not here.

Mango is a dense hardwood with a pronounced open grain and a warm mid-brown tone. Rubberwood is pale and close-grained, which is why it takes a stain predictably and appears under walnut and oak finishes as often as its own. Oak is hard, light and strongly figured, and walnut is darker with a straighter grain.

Measure the depth, not just the width. A desk under 20 inches deep will not take a monitor at a comfortable viewing distance. Check the clearance underneath if you are tall, and the weight rating if the top is carrying a monitor arm.

Solid wood is heavier than board, so a wide desk on a solid top is a two-person carry and the listings say so where the supplier states it. Keep the desk out of the path of a radiator or a sunny window, since timber moves with humidity.

How to clean a wood desk
Wipe a solid wood desk with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away, working with the grain rather than across it. Skip all-purpose sprays and anything containing ammonia or silicone: they strip an oiled finish and leave a haze on a lacquered one. For a mark that will not lift, a little soap flake solution on a cloth is usually enough. Blot spills as they happen rather than letting them stand, because an unsealed or oiled top will take a ring within minutes where a laminate would not.
Is walnut a good wood for a desk?
Walnut is one of the better desk woods. It is a hardwood, so it resists the dents a keyboard tray or a monitor foot will put into a softwood, and its grain is straight and even, which keeps a wide top looking calm rather than busy. The colour is a deep chocolate brown that lightens slightly with age. The trade-off is cost, since walnut is among the more expensive furniture timbers, and many desks sold as walnut are a walnut-coloured finish over board rather than the timber itself. What color goes with a walnut desk?
Walnut sits well against off-white, warm grey, sage and deep green, all of which let the brown read as warm rather than muddy. Black hardware and black metal legs sharpen it; brass warms it. Avoid putting walnut directly beside a cooler wood such as ash or a grey-toned oak, because the two undertones fight. If the room already has a strong wood floor, matching the desk exactly is harder than choosing a clearly different tone and letting them read as separate pieces.
