Farmhouse desks with turned and trestle legs

A farmhouse desk borrows the proportions of a farmhouse table: a plain rectangular top, visible legs rather than a closed pedestal, and a warm wood tone.

Three things make a desk farmhouse rather than modern, and none of them is the colour. The legs are visible and shaped, usually turned, tapered or arranged as a trestle. The top is a plain rectangle with a squared or lightly eased edge. And the finish is matte and warm rather than glossy.

The style suits a desk that lives in a room people also sit in. A farmhouse desk in a spare bedroom or a corner of a living room reads as furniture, where a black glass and steel desk in the same spot reads as equipment.

Farmhouse is a look, not a material. Some desks here are solid timber and some are engineered board with a wood-tone finish, and each listing states which it is in its own construction line.

If solid timber matters specifically, the Solid Wood Desks page is filtered to exactly that and excludes anything with a board core.

Check depth as well as width, since a desk under 20 inches deep will not hold a monitor at a comfortable distance, and check whether the top is sealed: a matte farmhouse finish is more open than a gloss and takes a ring from a mug faster.

Frequently asked questions

What is standard desk height?
Standard desk height is 29 to 30 inches from the floor to the top of the work surface, and farmhouse desks are built to the same range as any other desk. The style affects the legs and the finish, not the ergonomics. Each listing states its measured height.
How to clean a wood desk
Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry straight away, working with the grain. Avoid all-purpose sprays containing ammonia or silicone, which strip a matte finish and leave a haze. A farmhouse finish is usually more open than a gloss, so blot spills as they happen rather than letting them stand.
How to organize office desk
Work out from the keyboard: the things you touch hourly go within arm's reach, the things you touch daily go on the desk but out of the primary zone, and everything else goes off the surface entirely. A farmhouse desk usually has fewer built-in drawers than a pedestal desk, so plan for a separate drawer unit or a shelf if you need enclosed storage.
How to choose a home office desk for multiple monitors
For two monitors, look for at least 47 inches of width and 24 inches of depth so the screens sit roughly an arm's length away. Check the stated surface weight capacity if you are using a monitor arm, because an arm clamps to the edge and loads the desk unevenly rather than spreading the weight.
